"Was wounded in the Civil War in Mississippi near Biloxi. [On the
battlefield is a monument with his name in his regiment.] He had a
violin he carried in the Horse Battalion. Ray [his son] had the
violin ... They also had the bullet taken from his hand. He was shot
while carrying the Yankee flag. Ray gave the bullet to Charles Long
in Canton, Ohio.
"Daniel was a Private, F Company, 16th Regiment, Ohio Infantry,
April 20, 1861 to August 18, 1861, three months and 28 days;
Sargeant, E Company, 80th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, November 6, 1861 to
November 15, 1864, three years, nine days. "
